Coaching is More Than Hot Takes—It’s Human Connections
In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in the noise around what makes a coach great—and who you should choose to help you hit your goals.
Between the hype online about velocity training, endless hot takes on Instagram, and conversations that make training sound like a complex science project, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Coaches flexing their intellectual muscle online or obsessing over the next “big thing” in fitness can make you feel like the real value of coaching is all about trends and technical details.
But here's the truth I’ve learned over the years: coaching isn’t about keeping up with trends or how divisive my latest post is on social media.
It’s about real human connection.
When I built MWBC, I didn’t want it to just be about the sets, reps, and results on every program. I wanted to build something bigger, something that went beyond the surface of numbers and performance. I wanted a community that was rooted in relationships—relationships with the athletes I work with and the supportive community that lifts them up. It’s about real human connections that go far beyond the weight you lift or the PB you hit.
So, let’s talk about what coaching really is. It’s simple, and it’s all about human beings.
1️⃣ Coach the Human First
You can know all the technical details in the world, but none of that matters if you don’t know the person standing in front of you. Every lifter has a unique story, with different motivations, challenges, fears, and goals. The foundation of every coaching relationship begins with getting to know the human being—not just their snatch 1RM.
Before we even get into technique or programming, I ask my athletes about what drives them. What gets them out of bed every day? What do they want to prove to themselves? What have they struggled with in the past? What’s holding them back?
I make it a point to listen—to understand their mindset, their emotional landscape, and their goals—so that when we get into the details of their training, it’s not just about "lifting heavy." It’s about crafting a plan that is deeply tied to their individual needs, emotions, and journey.
2️⃣ Get Human Results
Progress isn’t always about smashing a PB every session. Sometimes, progress looks like showing up on the days you don’t feel like it. Sometimes it’s about learning how to trust your body, even when it feels like your mind is screaming “stop.”
At MWBC, we celebrate every breakthrough—whether it’s a small technical tweak that makes a lift feel smoother or overcoming mental barriers that have been holding someone back. We also rebuild after setbacks, because setbacks are a part of the process. They don’t define us; how we respond does.
I’ll never forget one of our athletes who was struggling with severe self-doubt after a long string of failed attempts at a competition lift. She felt like quitting. But instead of letting that failure define her, we leaned into it together, breaking the lift down and focusing on the small wins. Months later, she hit a PB with the same lift, not because we focused solely on the physical side, but because we built the mental resilience to keep pushing through the tough times.
Every person’s journey looks different, and it’s through these human moments of connection and growth that we achieve results that are meaningful.
3️⃣ The Power of Time and Trust
This isn’t a quick-fix game. Coaching, real coaching, takes time. It’s not about seeing rapid results in the first month or having every session feel like a win. True change—whether in lifting, mindset, or habits—takes time to cultivate. It’s built on trust, and it requires consistent effort from both the coach and the athlete.
When I work with athletes for years, I see their progress not just in how their lifts improve, but in their confidence, their mindset, and their personal growth. These aren’t just athletes anymore; they’re people who trust me to help them become the best versions of themselves. And that trust is what fuels their potential.
If you’re in it for the long haul, you need to build a foundation of trust and understanding. You need to know your coach isn’t just there to call out your technique or write your program. They’re there to help you through those dark moments, to support your growth even when it feels slow, and to remind you that it’s all worth it in the end.
4️⃣ Coaching Beyond the Numbers
Any coach worth their salt knows this isn’t just about the numbers. Sure, PBs are important—they’re the visible evidence of progress—but they aren’t the only measure of success. What matters more is whether you’ve learned to trust your body, whether you’ve developed the mental resilience to push through hard times, and whether you’ve grown as a person, not just an athlete.
It’s about knowing that when the PBs stall, you’ve got a coach who’s in your corner, ready to dig deeper with you. It’s about creating a space where you’re not just defined by the weight you lift, but by your commitment, your growth, and your ability to keep going when things get tough.
5️⃣ MWBC: A Community Built on Human Connections
At MWBC, we’re not just about lifting; we’re about building a community that celebrates the human aspect of strength. Every athlete here is supported, not just by their coach, but by the community around them. We’re all in this together—lifting each other up when the bar feels heavy, cheering each other on when it’s time to hit that next PB, and creating a space where vulnerability, support, and strength coexist.
The relationships we build here aren’t just a byproduct of an athlete’s results—they’re the foundation of those results. We believe that when you have a strong relationship with your coach and your community, the potential is limitless.
