Static Setup vs. Dynamic Setup: Which One Should You Choose?

What is a Dynamic Setup?

In a dynamic setup, the lifter doesn't hold their final setup position. Instead, they initiate the lift by moving through their setup. This movement can be done in various ways, some more individual and others more common.

Why Choose a Dynamic Setup (Beyond Just Looking Cool)?

  • Confidence Boost: The movement can help some lifters feel more confident before the lift.

  • Increased Tension: The movement can help create more tension throughout the setup.

  • Improved Speed and Power: The movement can contribute to greater speed and power during the lift.

What is a Static Setup?

In a static setup, the lifter holds their final setup position and initiates the lift from there.

Benefits of a Static Setup:

  • Focus on Contact, Balance, and Tension: This approach allows the lifter to focus on establishing proper contact points, balance, and tension before initiating the lift.

So, Which Setup is Right for You?

  • Beginner/Intermediate Lifters: A static setup is recommended. This helps reinforce good positions and consistency with your lifts.

  • Advanced Lifters: You can potentially incorporate a dynamic setup. However, don't choose it solely because it looks cool or because elite lifters do it. The movement should feel natural and purposeful for you.

Important Note:

Many people claim to use a "dynamic setup" when their movement simply reflects improper setup. This can lead to missed lifts.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you use a dynamic or static setup, do it with purpose.  Choose the approach that benefits your own technique, not what you see someone else doing online. Beginners and intermediate lifters should always prioritize the static setup to master the fundamental technique before attempting variations.
