It's More Than Just the Total
Your total does not determine your worth or make you a "real" weightlifter. There is no magic weightlifting fairy that waves its magic wand and deems you worthy once you have hit a bodyweight snatch or achieved a certain grade total. However, at MWBC, we firmly believe that a real weightlifter is more than someone who simply trains snatch and clean and jerk. A real weightlifter is someone who truly embodies the essence of the sport.
In the world of weightlifting, there is often a strong emphasis placed on achieving higher totals, breaking records, and reaching new levels of strength. While these accomplishments are undoubtedly impressive, it is crucial to recognize that being a true weightlifter goes far beyond the numbers. It involves embracing certain qualities and values that define the very essence of the sport.
When athletes encounter difficulties during training, face less-than-ideal competitions, or struggle with technical aspects of the lifts, the self-talk we hear as coaches often revolves around comparisons to others, questioning their own legitimacy as weightlifters, and admiration for the weights they are capable of lifting. What can sometimes be overlooked is the fact that when athletes prioritize their mindset, attitude, and commitment to becoming true students of the sport, improvements in total or technical proficiency tend to happen naturally.
Throughout this blog post, we will delve into what truly sets someone apart as "more" of a weightlifter and why one's worth in the weightlifting community should never be solely determined by a bigger total.
1. Showing Up and Work Ethic:
Being a weightlifter is not solely about physical prowess; it is about consistently showing up and putting in the necessary work. It entails dedicating oneself to the craft and embracing the discipline required to train day in and day out. Regardless of the weight lifted, an athlete who consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic exemplifies a true commitment to the sport and inspires others through their unwavering dedication. This is the essence of being a "real" weightlifter.
2. Supportive Teammate Mentality:
Weightlifting may be an individual pursuit, but the experience is greatly enhanced when done as part of a team. Being part of a community-driven club that thrives on support and camaraderie among athletes can elevate not only your own training but also that of others. As the saying goes, a rising tide lifts all boats. A "real" weightlifter understands the importance of being a supportive teammate, cheering on others, and celebrating their successes. This sense of camaraderie fosters a positive training environment where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.
3. Growth Mindset and Continuous Learning:
A weightlifter who truly embodies the spirit of the sport embraces a growth mindset. They understand that progress comes from continually learning, adapting to challenges, and seeking ways to improve. Whether it involves refining technique, studying the intricate aspects of the sport, or seeking guidance from coaches and mentors, a "real" weightlifter is always striving for personal growth and development. They acknowledge that effort directly correlates with outcomes and that nothing worthwhile comes without hustling for it.
4. Resilience in the Face of Challenges:
Weightlifting is not always smooth sailing. There are days when the bar feels heavy, setbacks occur, and doubts start to creep in. A true weightlifter courageously confronts these challenges head-on, showing up mentally and physically even when things get tough. It is the ability to push through adversity, maintain composure, and persevere that truly defines one's character as a weightlifter.
5. Embracing Grit and Determination:
Weightlifting is a demanding sport that demands mental and physical fortitude. It is not always glamorous or easy, but a "real" weightlifter understands and embraces this reality. They recognize that weightlifting can be a grueling endeavor at times, yet they choose to pursue it wholeheartedly. It is their unwavering determination and willingness to face challenges that sets them apart.
While a bigger total may earn recognition, respect, and social media clout, it is important to remember that being a weightlifter encompasses far more than the numbers on a scoreboard. It is about the qualities and values we bring to the sport—the ability to consistently show up, the work ethic we embody, the support we offer to fellow athletes, the growth mindset we cultivate, and the resilience we demonstrate in the face of adversity.
These are the qualities that truly make someone "more" of a weightlifter. So let us celebrate and admire those athletes who embody these characteristics, as they represent the heart and soul of weightlifting, especially here at MWBC.
