Your First Steps Into Weightlifting at MWBC

At MWBC, all levels are welcome, from someone who’s never touched a barbell before to experienced lifters with years of training under their belt. No matter where you’re starting from, we make sure you feel supported, challenged, and part of the team.

So what does it look like to begin at Melbourne West Barbell Club? Here’s the journey:

Step 1: Meet Your Coach

Your first session is all about getting to know you. We’ll chat about your background, maybe you’ve done some lifting at the gym, come from CrossFit, or never lifted a barbell in your life. Wherever you’re at, that’s your starting point.

We’ll also talk about your goals. Do you want to get stronger? Learn the Olympic lifts? Improve for another sport? Or are you even prepared to compete one day? Everyone’s “why” is different, and that’s what shapes the way we coach you. Then we’ll get you moving. This isn’t a test, just a chance to see how you move, what positions feel natural, and where we might focus first.

Step 2: Your Individualised Program

From there, you’ll get your own program written for you. This isn’t a generic plan pulled from a template; it’s tailored around your goals, training history, and how you move. This way we can better help you with your goals and make sure you get the very best out of your training.

Your program slots straight into our team sessions, so while you’re working on your own plan, you’re also training alongside others. That mix of individual coaching and group energy is one of the biggest strengths of MWBC. You’ll have the structure you need, but also the motivation and accountability of being part of a team.

Step 3: Train With the Team

Once you’ve got your program, you’ll jump straight into our team sessions. This is where MWBC really comes alive. You’ll be surrounded by lifters at all levels, some learning their very first lifts, others chasing big competition goals, but everyone pushing, supporting, and cheering each other on.

The team environment changes everything. Suddenly, you’re not just training on your own; you’ve got people who celebrate your progress, keep you accountable, and make the hard sessions more fun. It’s that mix of community and coaching that makes MWBC different, and it’s why people stick around long after their first session.

Why Training Here Feels Different

There’s something different about training at MWBC. It’s not just the equipment or the programs, it’s the people. You’re joining a community that genuinely cares about your progress, your goals, and your journey. Our coaches don’t just write programs, they’re invested in helping you with everything you need, whether that’s technical feedback, building confidence, or finding the right mindset on tough days.

The culture here is built on support, accountability, and genuine passion for weightlifting. We celebrate every win, no matter how small, and we push each other to grow. That’s what makes training here more than just lifting weights, it’s being part of a team that wants to see you succeed.

To make it even easier to take the first step, we’re offering free one-on-one sessions all through October. This is the perfect chance to meet your coach, try weightlifting, and see what MWBC is all about, no pressure, no expectations.

If you’ve been curious about weightlifting, or you’re looking for a place to train that actually supports your progress, now’s the time. Jump into our DMs and book your free session today.
